What is Vitiligo?

Vitiligo is a skin condition that results in loss of pigment, causing white patches to appear on various parts of the body, including the face, lips, hands, arms, legs, and genital areas. It affects 1% of the global population and does not discriminate based on race or gender.

The color of human skin is determined by the presence of a brown pigment known as melanin. Those with lighter skin produce minimal melanin, while those with darker skin produce more. The amount of melanin produced in the body can be impacted by various factors, including pregnancy, Addison's disease, and sun exposure. When there is an excess of melanin, the skin darkens. On the other hand, a deficiency of melanin results in lighter skin with areas appearing lighter than the normal skin color.

How Does Vitiligo Onset Happen?

The primary symptom of Vitiligo is the appearance of white patches on the skin, which can grow over time. These patches are caused by the loss of pigment in the skin, and can occur on any part of the body. In some cases, the white patches may cover a significant portion of the skin.

Is Vitiligo Internal Organ Disease? Is it contagious?

No, it is not an internal organ disease nor is it contagious.

Is Vitiligo A Disease With Treatment?

Treatment for vitiligo may vary from person to person as the exact cause of the disease is not known. It's important to consult with a dermatologist to determine the best course of action. Treatment options can take a minimum of 3 months to see results.

Can Herbal Products Treat Vitiligo?

You should only ever apply products that have been approved by the Ministry of Health first.

Is There a Surgical Treatment for Vitiligo?

There is a surgical approach for treating the condition and it’s known as the Punch Graft method, which involves transplanting skin from one part of the body to the affected areas to restore color.

Topical creams and herbal Vitiligo creams with antioxidants are often the initial treatment option. Another option is Puva therapy, which utilizes controlled ultraviolet light exposure in a closed cabin with a photosensitizing drug. This treatment helps to activate melanocytes, the cells responsible for skin pigmentation, in areas affected by Vitiligo, supporting the migration of pigmented cells and restoring color. Puva therapy can also be used to treat other skin conditions.

If standard treatments for Vitiligo are not effective and the condition has spread extensively, then depigmentation treatment may be considered. This method, famously used by the late singer Michael Jackson, equalizes skin color over the entire body by whitening it. Please note that the results of this procedure are permanent and it is essential to always protect the skin from harmful sun exposure. It is important to remember that Vitiligo will not improve without proper treatment.

What Should Vitiligo Patients Pay Attention To?

It's important that Vitiligo patients protect themselves from sunburns, harsh massages, scrubbing and other skin traumas.  Doctors advise that they protect themselves from the sun and try to reduce their stress level to equalize the differences between skin tone colors. It's also suggested that using vitamins such as  A, B and E can help combat the effects as they protect you partially from the sun’s rays. These vitamins can be taken either through foods eaten or from supplements.
